THE WEEDS

Woody Allen once said: “If you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans.” At one level, this is true, but I prefer Eisenhower’s quote. He said: “In preparing for battle, I’ve always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.”
As business owners our plans are our business and marketing plans. In other words, working ON the business as opposed to IN the business.
We’ve got to start to play things through, understand things properly, look at what might happen and where it might take us. Things will not go as you plan. They never do. Some things might work better than you thought they would. Other things will work worse than you thought they would. You need to understand that.
This is all about aim and direction. What you need to do is take your time and think deeply about this stuff, about where you’re going, and about this planning process. Our learning and our thinking determine our decisions.
Your ability to take time and think deeply about this stuff and then make the right decisions are really important here. Your results and performance next year will be equal to your skills and ability minus the interference that you allow in. Your Results = Skills - Interference If we think like an investor would think about our business, we’re all capable of mapping out the plan to get us where we want to go.
What will get in the way is the other stuff – the interference. THE WEEDS!
Final Thought: There’s a degree of comfort that comes from being in the weeds. It’s comfortable. Cosy.
But the price you’ll pay when you are stuck in the weeds is that you won’t develop your plans or crack the rhythmic acquisition of customers.
The next twelve months won’t be that much better than the previous twelve months for you.
The weeds keep you static and your business won't grow. They inhibit any and all upward movement. It’s a heavy price to pay.
