Last Thursday was Transfer Deadline Day across Europe.
An irrelevance for many, but a fascinating day for football fans - and for anyone with a business.
You see, all football clubs can only buy or sell players during the 12 week transfer window in the summer, or in the one month window in January.
That's twelve weeks they've had this summer but, as ever, almost as many deals were done in the final twelve hours than in the preceding eleven weeks and six days combined.
Why?
Because deadlines get things done.
Because if the deal wasn't done by 11pm last Thursday then it can't be done. Period.
I see the same thing in my coaching clients every month. The next meeting is the catalyst for members to get done that which they committed/promised/wanted to get done.
Without the very real deadline of the meeting - and being held accountable - things drift.
And we're all the same. None of us are immune.
It's actually harder for us as business owners because in most cases there's no one holding our feet to the fire. So if things take a bit longer, so what. No biggie.
But when your business coach is going to hold you accountable - or UEFA closes the book and says 'no more deals' - well, things get done.
Progress is made.
And that's why deadlines are the most useful of useful tools.
In truth, the existence (or not) of deadlines in your business - and your life - says more about the progress you'll make and the lifestyle you'll lead than almost anything else.
You can kid yourself, of course. Nod sagely because you know this already ;-)
But deep down, when you look in that bathroom mirror tonight the face staring back at you knows whether you're serious about building this dream business of yours or not.
And that face knows that if you really ARE serious that there'll be deadlines to be met.
Real, proper, drop dead, deadlines.
Just like the one every Premier League club wrestled with last week. With consequences if they're missed.
I promise you, every single super-successful business owner has 'em.
Deadlines that is.
And every wannabe has a good excuse as to why he/she hasn't got 'em!
